My diploma thesis proposes a transformation of the former military submarine bunker Dora 1 into a mixed-use urban block within the industrial harbour district Nyhavna of Trondheim, Norway.

The design proposal and an accompanying book illustrate thoughts and strategies of how to deal with and transform such deteriorated but distinguishable space into new forms of collective meaning and how worthless space can provide ample opportunities for experimental urbanism and architecture.

The project is based on a competition task for Europan 10 which asked for ideas to redevelop the Nyhavna harbor area. The bunker Dora 1, one of the most remarkable structures in the whole city, serves here as a starting point for a redevelopment process that draws on enhancement instead of demolition and a renegotiation of the relationship between a relict of the past and the exceptionally diverse and experimental neighborhood sorrounding it.
